Mandalika is being pitched as Bali 20 years ago. The infrastructure backs it up

Mandalika, spanning Kuta, Selong Belanak, and Sekotong on Lombok's south coast, stays on Watch this week. What separates it from the dozens of "next Bali" pitches is that the infrastructure is actually funded: an AIIB-backed special economic zone, a wide-body-capable airport, a permanent slot on the MotoGP calendar, and the Gili Mas cruise terminal are all built or under construction, not proposed.

The comparison to Bali two decades ago is the register's own framing, and it's a fair one: zoning is clearer here than it was in early Canggu, and entry prices are still a fraction of anywhere on Bali proper. The usual caveat applies, that "early" and "funded" aren't the same thing everywhere on the island, which is why the neighboring Sekotong peninsula sits one notch down at Monitor rather than joining Mandalika on Watch.
