HCMC breaks ground on a 350 km/h metro line to Can Gio

Ground broke on December 19, 2025, on the Ben Thanh-Can Gio metro, a 54 km line that will link central Ho Chi Minh City to the coastal district of Can Gio in about 20 minutes. Vinspeed, Vingroup's high-speed rail arm, is building it as Vietnam's first privately funded high-speed rail line, running trains designed for up to 350 km/h.

The project carries a price tag of roughly $3.9 billion (VND 102.4 trillion). Construction and equipment installation run from the fourth quarter of 2025 through the third quarter of 2027, with trial operation starting late 2027 and commercial service targeted for the first quarter of 2028.

Phase one opens with two stations: Ben Thanh in District 1 and Can Gio, sited next to the 39-hectare Can Gio Seaside Urban Tourism Development Area. A second phase would add four more stations, plus a depot and control center, if ridership justifies it.

Can Gio is also where Vingroup is developing a 2,870-hectare residential and tourism project, so the line's other function is ferrying future residents and visitors between downtown and a district that, until now, took considerably longer to reach by road.
